Heath Ledger föddes i Perth i Australien. Han föräldrar Kim och Sally, skildes när han var elva år. Redan då var han engagerad i teater.
Vid 16 års ålder flyttade han hemifrån till Sydney, där han fick en roll i den australiensiska tv-showen ?Sweat?. 1997 gjorde han sin filmdebut i ?Blackrock? och fick senare en roll i krigsdramaserien ?Roar?, där han spelade mot Keri Russell.
1998 prövade skådespelaren lyckan i Hollywood och fick huvudrollen i ?10 orsaker att hata dig? med Julia Stiles. Tonårskomedin blev en succé och drog in stora summor.
Heath fick år 2000 rollen som Mel Gibsons son i filmen ?Patrioten? och blev plötsligt ett namn i tidningarna. Tidningen Rolling Stone förutspådde att han skulle bli en stor stjärna och han prydde omslaget av Vanity Fair.
När Heath spelade in filmen ?En riddares historia? samma år i Prag träffade han Heather Graham, som befann sig i samma stad för en egen filminspelning. De två var ett par under cirka ett år och gjorde slut i juni 2001. När filmen lanserades utsågs han till en av världens 50 vackraste män av tidningen People.
2001 fick han spela Billy Bob Thorntons självmordsbenägna son i filmen ?Monster?s ball?. Under två år dejtade han 11 år äldre Naomi Watts, tills de gick skilda vägar 2003.
2004 skrev Heath på för huvudrollen i ?Brokeback Mountain?, en kärlekshistoria mellan två cowboys. Motspelaren var Jake Gyllenhall. Under filminspelningen träffade han också Michelle Williams som han inledde ett förhållande med. De två flyttade in tillsammans i Brooklyn.
Paret fick en dotter, Matilda Rose, den 28 oktober 2005, men separerade knappt två år senare, i september 2007.
2006 Oscarsnominerades Heath för rollen i ?Brokeback Mountain?. Filmen fick tre utmärkelser, bland annat för Ang Lees regi.
Efter uppbrottet med Michelle kopplades han samman med Helena Christensen.
Under 2007 spelade han rollen som clownskurken The Joker i Batmanfilmen ?The dark knight?, som har beräknad premiär senare i år, och berättade i november för New York Times att hans höga arbetsbelastning gett honom sömnproblem.
Den 22 januari, klockan 15:26 på eftermiddagen lokal tid, hittades 28-åriga Heath död i sin lägenhet i New York. Sömntabletter hittades i i stjärnans hem. Dödsorsaken utreds fortfarande.
